Ari Giancaterino is a professional bassist, composer and educator who has performed in the greater Los Angeles area and Bay Area for over a decade. He has received a Master’s degree in Jazz Bass Performance from California Institute of the Arts and a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Studies (Upright Bass) from the University of Southern California. Ari has performed with various artists across the Los Angeles and the world. Drawing inspiration jazz, funk, rock, and diverse world musics, He has created a unique style unto his own. He has performed alongside notable artists including Bennie Maupin, Scott Colley, Larry Koonse, Joe LaBarbera, David Roitstein, Darek Oles, Steve Lehman, Carmen Lundy, Steve Wilson, John Patitucci, Billy Childs, Rufus Reid, Matt Wilson, Otmaro Ruiz and Josh Nelson to name a few. His career in jazz music has included countless performances and recording sessions with independent artists as well as world-renowned jazz artists.
Ari has also been actively present on the world music scene in Los Angeles including performing with the Koobang Persian Ensemble, the Ghanian Ewe Ensemble and the Balinese Gamelan Ensemble. He has performed regularly at many note-worthy venues and festivals across Los Angeles, the West Coast, and the U.S. including the Troubadour, the Hotel Cafe, the Roxy Theatre, the Blue Whale Jazz Club, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Monterey Jazz Festival (CA), the Ravinia Jazz Festival (IL), and the Java Jazz Festival in Jakarta, Indonesia (2020).
As both a bandleader and composer, Ari has composed for and recorded on multiple albums including his albums of all-original compositions entitled Fear Animated (2019) and Yes No Yes (2020). As a sideman, he has been a featured artist on multiple recorded albums- two of which were recorded at the world-famous Capitol Records in 2018 and 2019.
Some of his other accolades have included winning the Angel City Young Artists Jazz Competition (as part of the Will Kjeer Trio) [2018], headlining the Angel City Jazz Festival (Los Angeles), receiving the Angel City Featured Artist 1st Place UCSD Jazz Scholarship [2018], and being selected as a Jazz Fellow for the esteemed Ravinia Festival (IL) [2019]
Ari is currently the full-time Contemporary Music Instructor at the San Domenico School in San Anselmo, CA.
